    What Is Digital Commerce?

    Digital Commerce

Digital commerce (or e-commerce) refers to the buying and selling of goods, services, and content through digital platforms and devices. It includes everything from online retail and app-based purchases to in-app subscriptions, mobile billing, and direct-to-consumer content models.

Unlike traditional e-commerce, which typically focuses on physical products sold via websites, digital commerce spans a wider range of experiences – including mobile apps, messaging, streaming platforms, and carrier-enabled services. It also integrates payments, customer engagement, marketing automation, and content delivery into a seamless user journey.

    What it means for telemedia

Digital commerce sits at the heart of the telemedia industry. From value-added services and mobile games to media subscriptions and micropayments, many of the most successful models in telemedia depend on fast, frictionless digital transactions.

Platforms increasingly rely on alternative payment methods like Direct Carrier Billing (DCB), mobile wallets, and app store billing to reach users who may not have access to credit cards or traditional banking. These channels enable monetisation in regions where digital access is high, but financial inclusion is limited.

Telemedia also plays a role in enabling and optimising digital commerce – with CPaaS platforms, messaging APIs, and mobile-first authentication tools providing the infrastructure that supports discovery, conversion, and retention.

    Example in use

A mobile video-on-demand platform expands into Sub-Saharan Africa, where traditional card-based payments have limited penetration. By integrating DCB and mobile money options, the service allows users to subscribe and pay through their mobile operator or wallet app.

At the same time, the platform uses SMS to onboard users, push content recommendations, and manage account notifications – creating an end-to-end digital commerce journey that fits local user behaviour.

    Why it matters

Digital commerce is the engine behind many mobile business models – especially in content, gaming, messaging, and streaming. For telemedia providers, understanding and enabling digital commerce is critical to growth, user engagement, and long-term monetisation.

It also creates opportunities to deliver richer, more personalised experiences through messaging, AI-driven recommendations, and frictionless billing. As consumer expectations continue to shift toward convenience and speed, the ability to support intuitive, mobile-first transactions becomes a major competitive advantage.

However, success in digital commerce also requires trust, compliance, and security. Fraud prevention, user authentication, and transparent billing practices are essential to building user confidence and meeting regulatory standards.
