Omnichannel payment platform revenue to exceed $100bn by 2031 as orchestration tunes up

Total revenue from omnichannel payment platforms will grow 57% over the next five years, rising from $56bn in 2026 to $108bn in 2031 – indicative of the growing move towards orchestrated payments that offer consumers a choice of how to pay.

This impressive growth is also being driven by increased adoption from merchants seeking to streamline their operational processes. By combining different channels into a single solution, merchants can reduce the operational burden of payments.

The leading omnichannel payment platforms also integrate with third-party services, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions, increasing efficiency.

The report from Juniper Research highlights that omnichannel payment platforms must, however, prioritise integration with third-party systems that add value for merchants in a tailored way, focusing on popular platforms in their target markets.

    Changing the telemedia payment stack

The growth of omnichannel payment platforms is closely tied to the wider shift towards payment orchestration. Bringing payment channels together into a single platform gives merchants the infrastructure they need not only to offer consumers more ways to pay, but also to manage those methods more intelligently.

Rather than operating cards, wallets, account-to-account payments, Open Banking and other local methods as separate silos, merchants can increasingly control them through one layer.

But offering payment choice is only half the challenge. Merchants also need to decide how each transaction should be handled as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. An omnichannel platform can provide the foundation for routing payments according to factors such as cost, geography, approval rates, risk and the payment methods preferred in a particular market.

In that sense, the move towards omnichannel payments is also a move towards orchestration: more choice for the consumer at the front end, with greater control and optimisation for the merchant behind it.

Juniper’s revenue forecast for these platforms points to more than merchants simply consolidating payment systems. Integration with ERP and other third-party services means payments are becoming embedded more deeply into the merchant’s wider operational stack.

The next step is for those platforms to use that connectivity to make smarter payment decisions, helping merchants balance consumer choice against acceptance rates, operational complexity and transaction costs.
