Traffic Pumping (Artificial Inflation of Traffic)
Traffic pumping, also known as Artificial Inflation of Traffic (AIT), is a type of telecom fraud where malicious actors deliberately generate high volumes of non-genuine traffic — such as SMS messages, voice calls, or mobile interactions — to exploit billing systems and collect revenue. This is often done by manipulating messaging flows, abusing call routing logic, or triggering excessive service requests.
The aim is to inflate traffic volumes without delivering actual user engagement or value, leading to losses for carriers, aggregators, and service providers.
What it means for telemedia
In the telemedia ecosystem, traffic pumping poses a major financial and operational threat. Fraudsters may target DCB flows, OTP systems, SMS campaigns, or premium-rate services, creating artificial interactions that result in real charges and revenue share payouts — with no legitimate user or conversion on the other end.
Common AIT methods include SMS pumping (bot-triggered messages), fake subscription flows, incentivised click fraud, and call redirection through high-cost international routes. Left unchecked, traffic pumping distorts KPIs, erodes trust with operators, and drains marketing budgets.
To combat it, telemedia providers deploy velocity checks, IP filtering, HLR validation, and anti-fraud platforms with AI-based pattern recognition.
Example in use
A telemedia platform launches a global SMS campaign for a new subscription service. Within hours, an unexpected spike in message volume is traced to a botnet exploiting the opt-in form via automated scripts. The SMS delivery is real, but the user is fake — and the operator bills the sender for traffic that yields no ROI.
The campaign is paused and restructured with stronger fraud filters.
Why it matters
Traffic pumping damages the entire mobile value chain — from CPAs and campaign performance to carrier relationships and compliance. For telemedia brands operating at scale, the ability to detect and shut down artificial traffic in real time is essential to protecting margins and reputation.
In a high-volume industry, even small leaks add up fast.
