Telephony
Telephony is the technology and infrastructure that enables voice communication over distances — traditionally via wired telephone networks, and now increasingly through mobile and internet-based systems. It encompasses both circuit-switched (PSTN) and packet-switched (VoIP, mobile, and OTT) voice services.
Modern telephony includes mobile calls, fixed-line networks, cloud-based calling platforms, call centres, VoIP apps, and enterprise communication tools.
What it means for telemedia
In the telemedia space, telephony plays a key enabling role in value-added services (VAS), voice-based content, customer support, IVR flows, and billing. Voice remains a vital channel for user engagement in many markets — particularly where internet access or smartphone penetration is limited. Services like call-to-listen radio, voice quizzes, missed-call marketing, and IVR billing models are built on telephony infrastructure.
Telemedia companies often integrate telephony with mobile billing (via premium rate numbers), CRM systems, and analytics tools to deliver monetised, automated, or interactive voice services. In emerging regions, voice can be more impactful than SMS or data-based channels.
With the rise of VoLTE, 5G voice, and CPaaS platforms, telephony is also evolving as a programmable, on-demand service for content delivery and user interaction.
Example in use
A dating service in Southeast Asia offers anonymous voice chat between users via a short code. The call is routed through a telephony platform that masks caller IDs, manages call duration, and bills per minute using premium voice charges — with reports sent back to the content provider for analytics and settlement.
Telephony underpins the monetisation and user experience.
Why it matters
Telephony remains foundational in mobile engagement — especially in markets and use cases where voice is more accessible, trusted, or culturally preferred than text or apps. For telemedia players, it offers a scalable way to deliver interactive, billable services that can reach users across devices and demographics.
It’s the original channel — and still a relevant one.
