SMS (Short Message Service)
SMS, or Short Message Service, is a standardised protocol for sending text messages — up to 160 characters — between mobile devices over cellular networks. It remains one of the most widely used communication formats globally due to its simplicity, reach, and reliability, operating independently of internet access or smartphone requirements.
SMS can be one-way or two-way and is commonly used for personal messaging, service alerts, marketing, authentication, and mobile billing communications.
What it means for telemedia
In the telemedia space, SMS is a core channel for delivering value-added services (VAS), customer communications, and direct-to-consumer billing flows. It powers subscription sign-ups, opt-in and opt-out confirmations, billing triggers, renewal alerts, one-time passwords (OTPs), and service promotions — all in a mobile-native format that works on virtually every handset.
SMS is also used in conjunction with Direct Carrier Billing (DCB), where users authorise payments or receive transactional updates via message. For providers, SMS offers immediacy, ubiquity, and measurable engagement in both emerging and mature mobile markets.
Despite the rise of OTT messaging, SMS retains strategic importance thanks to its guaranteed delivery, regulatory support, and telco integration.
Example in use
A mobile content service sends a user an SMS: “Get unlimited access to games for £1.50/week. Reply YES to subscribe.” Upon replying, the user receives a confirmation message with billing details, a help URL, and opt-out instructions. The charge is handled via DCB and added to the user’s mobile bill.
The entire flow is frictionless, fast, and fully compliant.
Why it matters
SMS is the bedrock of mobile communication and a vital link between users, service providers, and mobile operators. Its reliability, compatibility, and directness make it indispensable for user acquisition, billing, retention, and trust-building in the telemedia ecosystem.
Whether used for alerts or transactions, SMS delivers where it counts.
