Shortcode
A shortcode is a special 5–6 digit number used in mobile messaging for sending and receiving SMS or MMS messages. Unlike full-length mobile numbers, shortcodes are designed for high-volume, two-way communication — often used for promotions, voting, alerts, service subscriptions, and billing flows.
Shortcodes are typically leased by businesses through aggregators or mobile network operators (MNOs), and can be shared (used by multiple brands with keyword triggers) or dedicated (exclusive to one service).
What it means for telemedia
Shortcodes are a foundational element of the telemedia ecosystem, enabling frictionless user interaction with VAS, mobile billing, authentication, and marketing campaigns. They are used for opt-ins, subscription confirmations, content delivery, chat services, payment triggers, and customer care workflows — all within a familiar SMS environment.
For example, a user might text a keyword (e.g., “JOIN”) to a shortcode to subscribe to a weekly mobile content service, with the charge handled via Direct Carrier Billing (DCB).
Shortcodes must comply with regulatory frameworks and operator rules, including clear pricing disclosure, opt-out instructions, and transparent billing flows — especially when linked to premium rate services.
Example in use
A music fan sees an ad to get ringtones by texting “MUSIC” to 80100. When they send the message, they receive a confirmation reply outlining the cost (£1.50 per download), opt-out details, and a link to content. The shortcode (80100) is connected to a VAS platform that handles billing and delivery.
The experience is simple, direct, and mobile-native.
Why it matters
Shortcodes make it easy for users to interact with telemedia services using a familiar, low-friction channel. They enable everything from impulse subscriptions to mass participation campaigns, and are especially effective in markets with high SMS usage and limited internet access.
For service providers, they are a powerful tool for scalable, direct-to-consumer communication and billing.
