    GlossaryWhat Is Network Slicing?

    What Is Network Slicing?

    Network Slicing

Network slicing is a 5G technology that allows mobile operators to create multiple virtual networks — or “slices” — on a single physical network infrastructure. Each slice is tailored to meet specific performance, latency, security, and bandwidth requirements, making it ideal for delivering differentiated services across industries, devices, and use cases.

These slices can run in parallel, ensuring dedicated resources for each service type without interference or performance degradation from others.

    What it means for telemedia

For the telemedia ecosystem, network slicing opens the door to more targeted, reliable, and monetisable digital service delivery. It allows operators and content providers to guarantee service quality for bandwidth-sensitive applications like streaming, cloud gaming, XR, or real-time sports betting — especially when delivered over mobile networks.

Telemedia companies can collaborate with MNOs to access or sponsor slices optimised for their service needs. For example, a low-latency slice might be allocated to a real-time quiz platform, while a high-throughput slice powers 4K OTT video content. This creates opportunities for performance-based pricing, premium service tiers, and brand-aligned experiences.

It also supports mission-critical applications like mobile health and mLearning, where network performance directly affects usability and outcomes.

    Example in use

A live-streaming sports platform partners with an MNO to reserve a 5G network slice during match days. This ensures uninterrupted HD streaming for subscribers, even in high-traffic zones. The platform promotes its “lag-free” premium pass as part of a telecom bundle.

Analytics confirm higher session times and subscriber upgrades on match days.

    Why it matters

Network slicing allows telemedia providers to deliver consistent, high-quality mobile experiences even in congested or demanding network environments. It reduces reliance on best-effort delivery models and gives providers more control over performance — which directly impacts engagement, retention, and monetisation.

As 5G rolls out, network slicing will be key to unlocking service differentiation and premium business models across content, commerce, and communication sectors.
