Mobile Retargeting
Mobile retargeting is a digital marketing strategy that targets users on mobile devices who have previously interacted with a brand, app, website, or piece of content, but did not complete a desired action, such as a subscription, purchase, or app install. It uses data-driven ad placements across apps, mobile web, push notifications, and social platforms to re-engage users and encourage them to convert.
Techniques include dynamic ads, deep linking, geofencing, behavioural segmentation, and cross-device tracking.
What it means for telemedia
In the telemedia ecosystem, mobile retargeting is an essential component of the performance marketing mix. It helps providers recover lost leads, reduce churn, and improve conversion rates by reminding users of unfinished journeys, whether it’s a half-completed DCB subscription, an abandoned content portal visit, or an uninstalled app.
Telemedia brands use retargeting to drive traffic back to landing pages, re-engage lapsed subscribers, or push contextual offers through ads, notifications, or SMS. It works especially well in combination with CRM data, A/B testing, and billing insights to segment and personalise messaging.
Retargeting can be campaign-based or real-time, and is often managed through DSPs or integrated mobile marketing platforms.
Example in use
A VOD platform notices a high number of users drop off after viewing a movie trailer but not subscribing. It uses mobile retargeting to serve those users banner ads and in-app placements promoting a “first-week free” offer, deep-linked to the carrier billing flow.
Users who click are taken straight to the opt-in page, resulting in a measurable lift in sign-ups.
Why it matters
Mobile retargeting enables telemedia companies to optimise their acquisition and engagement spend by focusing on users who’ve already shown intent. It improves ROI, boosts lifetime value, and allows for smarter, more personalised follow-ups.
In an environment where attention is scarce and competition is high, retargeting ensures opportunities aren’t lost after the first touch, but nurtured into conversions.
