    GlossaryWhat Is m-Payment?

    What Is m-Payment?

    m-Payment

m-Payment (mobile payment) refers to financial transactions carried out via mobile devices – typically smartphones or feature phones – using technologies such as mobile wallets, Near Field Communication (NFC), QR codes, SMS billing, or direct carrier billing (DCB). These payments can be used for purchases in physical stores, online services, app subscriptions, digital content, and peer-to-peer transfers.

The m-payment ecosystem includes platforms like Apple Pay, Google Wallet, M-Pesa, carrier billing systems, and countless region-specific mobile money providers.

    What it means for telemedia

In telemedia, m-payment is a cornerstone of monetisation – especially in regions with low credit card penetration but high mobile usage. It allows operators, content platforms, and VAS providers to offer seamless, frictionless billing mechanisms that are tailored to local infrastructure and user preferences.

DCB is one of the most widely used forms of m-payment in the sector, enabling users to pay for digital services, from video streaming to ringtones, by simply charging purchases to their mobile bill or prepaid credit. Mobile wallets and app store integrations offer alternative routes that support subscriptions, microtransactions, and freemium models.

Telemedia companies often design mobile-first user flows that embed m-payment options directly into onboarding, checkout, and upsell experiences, boosting conversion and retention.

    Example in use

A gaming portal in Sub-Saharan Africa enables users to unlock premium content using a mobile money service integrated via USSD and wallet APIs. No banking details or apps are required, users simply confirm payment via PIN and continue using the platform.

The provider sees increased revenue in mobile-first markets and builds audience segments based on wallet usage data and transaction behaviour.

    Why it matters

m-Payment unlocks digital revenue in places where traditional banking infrastructure doesn’t reach. For telemedia providers, it supports real-time, scalable monetisation, with fewer barriers to entry and faster payment cycles.

It also enables more inclusive business models, targeting users across devices, data plans, and income levels. But success in m-payment depends on local partnerships, strong customer authentication, and clear user consent to ensure trust and compliance with payment regulations.

As mobile becomes the default channel for digital consumption, m-payment is no longer optional, it’s foundational.
