What Is Customer Lifetime Value (CLV)?

    Customer Lifetime Value (CLV)

Customer Lifetime Value, or CLV, is a metric that estimates the total revenue a business can expect from a single customer over the entire duration of their relationship. It takes into account average revenue per user (ARPU), subscription length, repeat purchases, and churn rate.

CLV helps businesses understand how valuable a customer is over time – not just at the point of acquisition – and plays a key role in shaping marketing spend, retention strategies, and overall business planning.

    What it means for telemedia

In the telemedia space, CLV is essential for understanding the long-term profitability of users acquired through campaigns like mobile subscriptions, direct carrier billing (DCB), or app installs. Many services in this space rely on high-volume, low-cost customer acquisition – but it’s CLV that determines whether those users actually drive sustainable revenue.

For example, two users may cost the same to acquire, but one unsubscribes after a few days while the other stays for months. CLV captures that difference and helps platforms optimise for the users who offer the most long-term value.

Operators, content providers, VAS platforms, and aggregators all use CLV to measure campaign quality, evaluate traffic sources, and decide where to allocate budget. It’s particularly useful when running CPA or CPI-based campaigns, where the cost is fixed but user behaviour varies.

    Example in use

A mobile games subscription service uses campaign tracking to evaluate three traffic sources, all delivering subscribers at the same CPA. However, after 30 days, one group of users averages two billing events, another group averages four, and a third unsubscribes before the trial ends.

By calculating CLV for each source, the service reallocates budget toward the higher-value partners – not just those with the cheapest acquisition cost. This leads to a significant increase in total revenue without raising the marketing budget.

    Why it matters

CLV is one of the most important metrics for sustainable growth in telemedia. It helps businesses move beyond short-term performance and focus on acquiring and retaining users who deliver long-term profitability.

In a market where churn is common, billing cycles vary, and regulatory compliance affects flows, knowing the value of a user over time can guide smarter decision-making – from pricing and content updates to re-engagement strategies.

CLV also helps justify higher acquisition costs when targeting premium user segments, and supports testing of new services, bundles, or upsell paths based on real user value rather than assumptions.
