    GlossaryWhat Is Churn Rate?

    What Is Churn Rate?

    Churn Rate

Churn rate is the percentage of users or subscribers who stop using a service or cancel their subscription within a given time period. It’s a key performance metric used to evaluate customer retention and service stickiness.

Churn can be calculated monthly, quarterly, or annually depending on the service model. A high churn rate indicates that users are leaving quickly, while a low churn rate suggests strong retention.

    Formula:
Churn Rate = (Number of Users Lost During Period / Total Users at Start of Period) × 100

    What it means for telemedia

In the telemedia space — where subscription billing, mobile content services, and digital engagement are common — churn rate is a critical measure of business health. It directly affects recurring revenue, customer lifetime value (CLV), and the cost-efficiency of user acquisition campaigns.

Services that operate on DCB (Direct Carrier Billing), freemium upgrades, or bundled mobile offers must track churn closely to understand where users drop off and why. High churn may be due to unclear billing, lack of content updates, poor onboarding, or inadequate customer support.

Telemedia providers use churn insights to refine pricing models, improve content personalisation, and time retention campaigns (such as SMS win-back messages or promotional offers).

    Example in use

A mobile video subscription platform launches in several markets and tracks its monthly churn rate. In one region, it notices that over 20% of users cancel within the first two weeks. Upon investigation, it finds that the content library is too limited for local tastes.

The team updates the content mix, adds a free trial, and introduces regionalised onboarding flows — leading to a drop in churn to under 10% the following month.

    Why it matters

Churn rate affects the sustainability of any subscription or content-based business. Reducing churn means extending the lifetime value of each user, lowering acquisition pressure, and improving profitability.

For telemedia services operating in high-churn environments — such as VAS or short-term offers — even small changes to churn can have a major impact on margins. Monitoring churn also helps identify product-market fit, user satisfaction, and where retention efforts are most needed.

That said, not all churn is bad. Seasonal fluctuations, trial users, or one-time purchases may naturally result in short-term drop-offs. What matters is understanding the patterns and responding strategically.
