Banner Advertising
Banner advertising refers to the use of rectangular or square image-based ads that appear on websites, mobile apps, or digital platforms. These ads are typically placed in dedicated ad slots — such as headers, footers, or sidebars — and are used to promote products, services, or content.
Banners can be static, animated, or interactive, and they usually link to a landing page when clicked. The format is one of the oldest forms of digital advertising, but it remains widely used due to its scalability and low entry cost.
What it means for telemedia
In the telemedia ecosystem — where user acquisition, monetisation, and engagement are core business drivers — banner ads are a staple of both web and in-app campaigns. Content providers, VAS aggregators, games, and entertainment services use banners to drive traffic, convert users, or upsell premium content.
Banner inventory is commonly filled via programmatic advertising, affiliate networks, or direct media buys. For services with freemium or ad-supported models, banner ads are a key revenue stream — particularly on mobile web portals and low-bandwidth content platforms.
Telecom operators may also use banner placements in their self-care apps or mobile portals to promote add-ons, cross-sell services, or partner offers.
Example in use
A mobile gaming app offers a free tier with banner ads displayed at the top of the screen. These ads are served via a programmatic ad network and are tailored to the user’s device and location. The app earns revenue each time a user clicks or views an ad (depending on the payment model).
At the same time, the app may offer an ad-free upgrade for users who prefer an uninterrupted experience.
Why it matters
Banner advertising provides a simple, cost-effective way to monetise traffic or promote services. It’s easy to implement, works across most platforms, and integrates well with programmatic tools. For publishers and content platforms, it creates a non-intrusive monetisation layer that can run in the background of the user experience.
However, banners also have limitations. Click-through rates (CTR) are often low, and users may develop “banner blindness” over time. On mobile, screen space is limited, so poor ad placement can harm engagement.
To be effective, banner campaigns must be well-targeted, mobile-optimised, and designed to complement the platform’s look and feel.
