Alternative Payments
Alternative payments refer to any non-traditional payment methods used instead of debit or credit cards. These include digital wallets, mobile money, carrier billing, bank transfers, prepaid cards, buy now pay later (BNPL), cryptocurrency, QR-based payments, and account-to-account (A2A) transfers.
These methods are increasingly popular across mobile and digital platforms, especially in markets where card penetration is low, or where users prefer faster or more secure payment options.
What it means for telemedia
For digital content providers, telecom operators, OTT platforms, and mobile service companies, alternative payments are a key part of customer acquisition and monetisation strategies — especially in regions with low banking access or card usage.
Direct Carrier Billing (DCB), for example, is one of the most common alternative payment methods in telemedia, allowing users to charge services to their phone bill. Mobile wallets like M-Pesa, Paytm, or Apple Pay are also widely used in mobile-first markets. A2A payments, powered by open banking, are gaining traction as a lower-cost alternative for recurring or instant transactions.
Offering a range of payment methods helps reduce checkout friction and increases conversion. It also supports monetisation in emerging markets where local preferences vary significantly from traditional Western card-based models.
Example in use
A mobile game platform targeting Southeast Asia integrates a mix of alternative payment methods: carrier billing for unbanked users, QR codes for wallet-based transactions, and real-time bank transfers for premium subscribers.
This multi-payment setup allows the platform to reach more users, boost conversion rates, and reduce dependency on high-fee card networks.
Why it matters
Alternative payments support growth, inclusion, and flexibility. They enable businesses to serve users who may not have access to credit cards, prefer not to use them online, or are more comfortable with local payment methods.
For telemedia providers, integrating alternative payments is often essential — not just a nice-to-have. It can directly influence market expansion, customer retention, and lifetime value.
However, managing multiple payment flows adds complexity. Businesses need to ensure compliance, security, and reporting across various platforms, while also tracking performance and costs. Partnering with the right payment gateway or aggregator is key.
