TL;DR
-
DIMOCO has introduced euro and dollar stablecoin settlement through Fipto, allowing merchants to receive funds in a digital wallet while customers keep paying in familiar ways.
-
For telemedia merchants operating across borders, the potential benefit is faster access to funds outside banking hours. Worldpay and Checkout.com offer similar options, while Boku is piloting stablecoin settlement rails.
-
The practical impact remains to be seen: DIMOCO has not specified which payment methods qualify or quantified the savings, and stablecoins will not shorten a mobile operator’s billing cycle.
DIMOCO, the Austrian licensed payment institution and principal member of Visa and Mastercard, hasintroduced stablecoin settlement, allowing merchants to receive funds directly into a digital wallet.
Stablecoin settlement provides an alternative route that is not limited by traditional banking hours and settlement cycles. Using blockchain technology, funds can move faster and across borders with greater ease, giving merchants greater flexibility over when and where they access and manage their money.
The solution does not affect the checkout experience. Customers can continue paying using the paymentmethods they already know and in their local currency.
“Settlement infrastructure should not determine how quickly, where or even whether a business can operate,” explains Clemens Leitner, CEO at DIMOCO. “Stablecoin settlement gives merchants access to infrastructure that allows money to move faster while removing barriers that can limit how they operate and grow across markets.”
Stablecoin settlement is embedded into DIMOCO’s offering and is made available via a partnership, with Fipto, a MiCA-regulated crypto-asset service provider, providing the stablecoin infrastructure for this service.
The solution offers settlement in EUR and USD stablecoins, which are designed to maintain a stable value relative to the euro and US dollar.
“The infrastructure behind payments is changing,” adds Patrick Mollard, co-founder & CEO of Fipto. “Stablecoin infrastructures have become more widely integrated, giving businesses new ways to move, receive and manage money. Through this collaboration, DIMOCO is bringing this capability to its merchants today.”
Stablecoin settlement opens a new way for merchants to receive and manage their funds. By moving beyond traditional settlement cycles, businesses gain greater agility to operate across markets and access the infrastructure they need to launch services, operate across borders and into new markets.
What this means for telemedia and payments
DIMOCO is joining a wider shift in payment infrastructure. Worldpay has offered USDC settlement to merchants in selected markets since 2022, while Checkout.com expanded stablecoin settlement for eligible US merchants this year.
Closer to the telemedia market, Boku says it is piloting stablecoin settlement rails. The test for DIMOCO will be whether its approach gets money to digital merchants faster and at a lower overall cost once conversion, wallet management and any eventual move back into bank accounts are taken into account.
For telemedia businesses, the interesting part is what happens after the customer pays. A subscriber can still use carrier billing, a card or another familiar method in their local currency, while the merchant chooses to receive its proceeds in a euro or dollar stablecoin wallet.
For digital content companies selling across several markets, that could mean quicker access to funds outside banking hours and more flexibility to move money between operations.
There is an important qualification, however: stablecoin settlement cannot speed up an operator’s own billing and remittance cycle. DIMOCO has not yet said which of its payment methods qualify or how much time merchants would save.
