ChatGPT adds Instant Checkout as AI discovery becomes shoppable – and the implications are huge

OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, allowing agentic AI to not only suggest things to Chat GPT’s 700 million daily users, but to surface goods that can then be purchased straight from the AI platform.

Built in conjunction with payment company Stripe, Instant Checkout is going live with Etsy in the US today and a million merchants using the Shopify ecommerce platform – with Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori, coming soon.

The move comes after Telemedia news reported back in July that OpenAI was planning to add payments and that that would have profound implications for ecommerce, online advertising and the digital content and services market.

In a blog post, OpenAI says that this marks the next step in agentic commerce, where ChatGPT doesn’t just help you find what to buy, it also helps you buy it. For shoppers, it’s seamless: go from chat to checkout in just a few taps. For sellers, it’s a new way to reach hundreds of millions of people while keeping full control of their payments, systems, and customer relationships.

Initially, the offering will support single purchases, but soon it will work like a shopping cart with multiple items being sourced and added to the basket in ChatGPT.

    How Instant Checkout works

When someone asks a shopping question—“best running shoes under $100” or “gifts for a ceramics lover” — ChatGPT shows the most relevant products from across the web. Product results are organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user.

If a product supports Instant Checkout, users can tap “Buy,” confirm their order, shipping, and payment details, and complete the purchase without ever leaving the chat. Existing ChatGPT subscribers can pay with their card on file, or other card and express payment options.

Orders, payments and fulfilment are handled by the merchant using their existing systems. ChatGPT simply acts as the user’s AI agent—securely passing information between user and merchant, just like a digital personal shopper would.

Merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases, but the service is free for users, doesn’t affect their prices, and doesn’t influence ChatGPT’s product results. Instant Checkout items are not preferred in product results. When ranking multiple merchants that sell the same product, ChatGPT considers factors like availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled, to optimize the user experience.

    The Agentic Commerce Protocol

At the core of this experience is the Agentic Commerce Protocol which provides the language that lets AI agents and businesses work together to complete a purchase for a user.

OpenAI built the Agentic Commerce Protocol with Stripe and leading merchants to:

    • Work across platforms, payment processors, and business types.
    • Integrate quickly without changing their backend systems.
    • Keep merchants in control of the customer relationship as the merchant of record across the purchase journey–from fulfillment and returns to support and communication.

When someone places an order, ChatGPT sends the necessary details to the merchant’s backend using Agentic Commerce Protocol. The merchant accepts or declines the order, processes the payment via their existing provider, and handles fulfilment and customer support exactly as they do today.

If a merchant already processes payments with Stripe, they can enable agentic payments in as little as one line of code. If they use another payment processor, they can still participate in Instant Checkout and accept agentic payments either by using Stripe’s new Shared Payment Token API or adopting the Delegated Payments Spec in the Agentic Commerce Protocol — all without changing their existing payment processor.

    The impacts are profound

Telemedia news has already looked at the potential impact of AI discovery on how consumers search for and find online services with AI rather than search or social. We have also looked at how adding payments to this discovery method is also going to have profound impacts on telemedia services.

It will bring about a wholesale change in how people pay for mVAS. Autonomous agents will need to support existing billing rails, including direct carrier billing — especially important for pay-per-use, in-app purchases, subscriptions, or for users without credit cards.

Compliance challenges will increase, with regulators requiring robust consent protocols, audit trails and fraud prevention to ensure agents do not make unauthorized mobile payments.

Such agentic commerce is also expected to accelerate the use and innovation of alternative payment methods – not least tokenized wallets, account-to-account transfers, buy now pay later, crypto and digital wallets, all of which will be orchestrated by agents.

As a result, platforms and merchants must expose payment options and data via APIs in machine-readable formats so agents can process transactions efficiently, transparently and securely.

There are a raft of broader implications to all this outside of just how things will evolve for payments and how people shop for mVAS. Traditional consumer journeys — manual browsing and checkout —will diminish in favour of API-driven, agent-mediated purchasing, disrupting the front-end focus of mobile content and payments.

Marketing and conversion strategies must shift: brands will need to appeal to AI agents through structured data, relevance, and clear value propositions surfaced in algorithmic selection processes.

Regulatory and privacy considerations will intensify; agents will handle highly sensitive data and purchasing decisions, demanding new standards for user authorization, fraud, and dispute resolution.

Taken together this all spells a potential big change up ahead for how consumers find, use and pay for content and services – changes that will be felt across the telemedia value chain.
